Big doses of black pepper, dark fruit and menthol on the nose. This is certainly a robust-smelling wine, with chunky aromas and an assertive profile. It's not an aroma that you argue with, although some may choose to simply walk away from the confrontation, especially those with little tolerance for eucalpytus/menthol type notes. Personally, I think they're in balance here and add some good regional character.
The palate is a rerun of the nose in terms of flavour profile. Lots of up-front flavour, peaking on the middle palate with a rush of blood plum-like fruit that swells and overwhelms the pepper and menthol aspects. There's a ripe generosity of fruit here, quite sweet in profile, that is very attractive, if not sophisticated or complex. It's anything but elegant, and in fact is a bit blocky in terms of how each element presents. The after palate is what I like most about this wine; it's clean and fruit-driven, gradually tapering to a decent finish. Tannins are ripe and sweet, and the wine seems designed for early enjoyment.
Lots of immediate pleasure; good value too. I was going to suggest taking it to a BBQ but it's more of an after dinner mint type of drink. Bring on Winter, open fires, a sunken lounge, bare feet and shaggy floor coverings.
